The first time I did this, I didn’t know how to find a person who needed a wheelchair. After many phone calls, I found out that not only were the people at the President’s Choice Children’s Charity willing to help me, but they also decided to contribute to the first wheelchair.
We bought that wheelchair with help from Joe’s No Frills in Toronto, on October 3, 2006 for a little boy named Ricardo.
Then it got even better.
The President’s Choice Children’s Charity set up “The Robert Hampson Tabs for Kids Fund”. I collected the tabs and sold them to a metal recycling depot for cash. This money went into “The Robert Hampson Tabs for Kids Fund”. Then the President’s Choice Children’s Charity found children who needed wheelchairs and other adaptive equipment and made the purchases. They also administered the fund.
I am very pleased to announce that in 2018, Easter Seals Ontario took over this role. They now administer “The Robert Hampson Tabs for Kids Fund” and purchase all equipment.
It’s amazing how something as small as a pop can tab can grow into something so big!
